Creatures of Comfort FW 16-17

Creatures of Comfort FW 16-17 / DressLab

The Fall/Winter 2016–2017 collection shown by Creatures of Comfort in New York this past fashion week has been true to the brand’s name and the day when it was presented, one of the coldest in the fashion capital. The labels outfits felt like swaddling in a blanket in your sofa in a cold rainy winter New York day. However, if we add some flat shoes to the oversize looks, the result is the intellectual Soho look that could well fit into a current-day Woody Allen film. And, yes it is true, this is the definition of sexy for some women: comfort and intelligence.

Creatures of Comfort FW 16-17 / DressLab

Designer Jade Lai decided to explore 17th century Dutch romanticism and romance in general. The collection was not ruled by only one influence or style but rather by a common thread that was obvious in the shapes, patterns, and the choice of colors. Moreover, we saw for the first time the accessories, which are currently being made in Italy, where the production of bags and shoes has been recently moved. The result? A great leap to a superior level in quality and craftsmanship.

Creatures of Comfort FW 16-17 / DressLab

Creatures of Comfort FW 16-17 / DressLab

Amongst the dominant excess and romanticism, cashmere and chenille knits stood out with their loose shapes, very long sleeves, and pompoms (pointing to ancient pantomime costumes). Other standouts are the frilly floor-length skirts, the heart prints and the outfit with which the designer opened the show: a pink velvet suit (creating one of the “it” combinations of the season with a yellow turtleneck) which gave a whimsy flair to the collection.

Creatures of Comfort FW 16-17 / DressLab

However, do not be afraid, Lai did not fall (or will she ever) into affectation and she has been able to perfectly balance her designs with the sobriety of denim pieces, wool coats in dark shades, and nylon parkas.

          Non-Gender, blur lines between genders

Non-Gender, blur lines between genders / DressLab

The gender revolution is finally around and has found the perfect spot in the fashion Universe. Men, women, transgender, is the end of gender labels! Who you are doesn’t matter anymore, fashion doesn’t make distinctions and that’s great news. Why should we keep using concepts from the past when no one follows them anymore? Women look for their oversize clothes at the Men department, while guys prefer skinny jeans from the women section. The perfect sneakers are bought in the kids’ zone just to find them cheaper, say goodbye to cataloguing! This century is for the gender revolution and, if there is a World that loves revolutions, is the fashion World.

Non-Gender, blur lines between genders / DressLab

Some may say that this change is making everything confusing. Nothing further from the truth! Getting rid of the gender idea turns everything into something appropriate, you can wear whatever you want. Coats, jeans, sweaters…this is the logic evolution of the boyfriend jeans’ concept, taken to the extreme. The importance of this gender redistribution is so huge that professional models have been forced to adapt, adopting different genders according to the needs. New top models are emerging with these ideals, such as Maryna Bunyak (right) or Andrej Pejic, called “the prettiest boy in the world”.

Non-Gender, blur lines between genders / DressLab

Obviously, wherever the fashion aims its goals Zara puts its objective and this case wouldn’t be less. With this idea, the brand has launched the collection Ungenered, with unisex clothes suitable for both genders. Despite of the controversy and rejection among the public, la main store of Inditex is setting a precedent in the low cost universe and approaching the concept of non-gender to the whole society. Remember this date, is the moment in which gender lines get blurry.

Empty Porn Sets by Jo Broughton

Empty Porn Sets by Jo Broughton / DressLab

Empty Porn Sets by Jo Broughton / DressLab

British photographer Jo Broughton grew up in a very conventional suburban environment in Essex, part of a set of parents and siblings who were distant and indifferent to her creative aspirations. It was not until 2001, that she found a cleaning job that would allow her to fund her years at the London’s Royal College of Art. So much for her ordinary life as common people. Jo did not clean building halls or stairs but a porn scenes studio.

Empty Porn Sets by Jo Broughton / DressLab

Empty Porn Sets by Jo Broughton / DressLab

Broughton admits that she felt that studio like home because it meant her dreams came true: studying art, having her ow studio, working as a photographer. However, she always hid her true job since she has conflicting feelings about the objectification of women in the porn industry.

Empty Porn Sets by Jo Broughton / DressLab

Empty Porn Sets by Jo Broughton / DressLab

She had to be the first to get to the set after the recording so she could find the crime scene still untouched. With photographs, sound recordings, Polaroids, sketches and even drawings, she captured in an incredibly aesthetic way the cheap fantasy environment and the resulting kitsch atmosphere.

Empty Porn Sets by Jo Broughton / DressLab

Empty Porn Sets by Jo Broughton / DressLab

The sets’ bright colors make us immediately (and ironically) think of kid’s birthday parties or a Barbie doll’s room but we soon discover incriminating proof: lube bottles, dildos, the spotlights, high heel shoes and underwear here and there. The contrast between the silent and abandoned set and the frenzy and excitement of the resulting product hits us immediately.

But Jo Broughton’s work is like that. Documenting to the point of being forensic. Whatever she does, it must be real: true porn sets, actual virgins, her own ex-boyfriends… In an odd voyeurism exercise, Jo shows form the typical porn set like hospitals where the classic nurse-patient scenes take places to original settings like ice caves (artificial and plastic, of course). Her ultimate intention was to make clear for everyone how unreal and fake the environment and also porn and its representation of sex really is.
