NASA & Lockheed Martin’s Supersonic “X-Plane” Is Quiet AF

In efforts to create an aircraft that can travel faster than the speed of sound without causing the loud sonic boom effect, NASA has awarded Lockheed Martin with a hefty $247.5 million cost-plus contract to design what’s being dubbed the “X-Plane,” reports SPACE.

Lockheed Martin’s secretive Skunk Works division will be in development of the piloted X-plane and incorporate the company’s Quiet Supersonic Technology (or QueSST). The experimental plane is expected to cruise at an altitude of 55,000 feet and reach speeds of about 940 mph. While such an aircraft would traditionally create a sonic boom, NASA expects the new aircraft to reduce the loudness of a sonic boom to that of a gentle thump.

With the prototype scheduled to test fly by 2021, the X-plane will travel over select U.S. communities to gather data on human responses to the low-boom flights and deliver that data set to U.S. and international regulators.

Upon analyzing, new sound-based rules regarding supersonic flight over land could be developed, and will open doors to new commercial cargo and passenger markets to provide even faster air travel. Previously, the last supersonic passenger air travel was completed by the Concorde in October 2003.

Is Amazon Going to Buy Target to Take on Walmart?

As Jeff Bezos and Amazon continue to strive for total world domination, one expert is even predicting that the e-commerce company will acquire Target at some point in 2018, per Business Insider.

“Amazon will acquire Target,” Loup Ventures analyst Gene Munster insisted when listing his predictions for the new year. “Amazon believes the future of retail is a mix of mostly online and some offline,” Munster went on to add. “Target is the ideal offline partner for Amazon for two reasons, shared demographic and manageable but comprehensive store count.”

Such a move would seemingly leave the likes of Walmart worried, catapulting Amazon’s stateside store count to more than 2,300, which is nearly half of Walmart’s.

Just last year, Amazon showed a concerted effort to become a player in offline retail by purchasing Whole Foods for $13.4 billion USD.

For more surrounding Amazon’s possible acquisition of Target, visit Business Insider and get the full story.

Dubai Unveils the “World’s Largest Picture Frame”

The UAE already houses a number of the tallest buildings in the world, most notably the megatall skyscraper Burj Khalifa, and now it includes the “World’s Largest Picture Frame.”

Situated in Dubai’s Zabeel Park, the structure simply dubbed as “Dubai Frame,” measures in at 150 meters or about 493 feet tall, which is highlighted by its 93-meter-long viewing bridge that features glass-floored walkways and panoramic views towards the old city of Deira to the north, and the skyscrapers of Sheikh Zayed Road toward the south. In addition, visitors will be led into an interactive, augmented reality exhibition that showcases the history and future of the city.

While this new structure has erected a decade after it was initially proposed, the project has received some controversy lately, as it was recently revealed that the idea of the design may have been stolen from the original architect.

For a further look and additional details on this world’s largest picture frame, be sure to read the full story at The Guardian.

Luke Skywalker Fights Kylo Ren in 16 Bit ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Animation

If you though Star Wars: The Last Jedi was epic, wait until you relive one of the movies most epic lightsaber fights in 16 bit resolution.

***Spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi below***

Created by animator John Stratman and uploaded to movie review YouTube channel Mr Sunday Movies, the video recreates the pinnacle moment in the film where Jedi Master Luke finally comes to the rescue of the fleeing Resistance in a last stand fight against the First Order and goes toe-to-toe with his troubled nephew.

The video reenacts the sequence beat-for-beat up until Skywalker becomes one with the Force while admiring a twin sunset on Ahch-To. All of the dialogue from the film appears word for word in speech bubbles, and the 16-bit version of John Williams’ score is as emotionally-stirring as its real-life counterpart.

It doesn’t live up to Adam Driver and Mark Hamill’s live-action performances, but there’s no denying it’s a fun alternative for those who have already seen The Last Jedi and want to experience one of its most iconic scenes in a new way. Watch above.

Stratman, please create Kylo and Rey’s Guardian fight scene next.

We Take a Deep Dive Into One of Los Angeles’ Best Military Surplus Shops with Alpha Industries

There are no shortage of authentic military surplus shops around the country—it’s why we’ve been traveling across America with Alpha Industries, one of the most respected and former suppliers of the US military, to uncover the remaining go-to spots in some of our favorite cities.

Our own Jeff Carvalho, Highsnobiety’s managing director and all-around vintage expert, takes us to the City of Angels to a California surplus chain founded more than 70 years ago. With only four shops left today, we visit the Burbank location of Supply Sergeant where Carvalho discovers why it’s such a treasure trove of military gear.

It’s a place where you’ll be able to unearth gems like German Flecktarn camo pieces that would be right at home in your wardrobe today as it would’ve been in a soldier’s uniform 25 years ago.

More traditional pieces like standard issue M-65 field jackets from Alpha Industries can still be found while trendy (and authentic) German police jackets that you’ve surely seen some fashion elite rocking are among just some of the fresh finds here.

“The thing I like about Supply Sergeant is you find a fair amount of surplus as you can see. But they also have vintage here,” explains Carvalho. “They have a pretty impressive run of 1970s bell bottoms. Just really cool to see these things out in the wild because it’s not something you typically see in a shop like this.”

Another reason why Supply Sergeant is such a unique operation is its one-stop-shop appeal, because more than likely you’ll be able to find something for everyone. Shop worker Jonn Mccrary leads us to an area containing an impressive wall of service patches, issue pins, and wings. It’s simultaneously an archival museum of sorts with the rich history that come with these military relics.

“My favorite right now is the ‘Star Wars Baby’ patch, it’s a unit from the Star Wars program back in the Reagan administration,” says Mccrary. “A few people know about it, but very few people know how many people were actually attached to the unit.”

It’s these fun little stories you learn about coupled with the extensive range of deadstock garbs from brands like Alpha Industries that make Supply Sergeant a truly unique shopping experience for military enthusiasts and streetwear heads alike.

Catch the full video above to peep all the classic gear they found and listen to Carvalho and Mccrary enter full nerd mode as they geek out on all things vintage. Check out our previous surplus finds in Portland and Boston, and learn more about Alpha Industries via the link below.

Japanese Scientists Made a Sweating, Exercising Robot That’s More Ripped Than You

After showcasing a humanoid robot doing a perfect backflip to Disney World recently unveiling a freakishly realistic Donald Trump robot, a group of Japanese scientists and engineers from University of Tokyo continue to push artificial intelligence further as they have created a humanoid robot with a correct musculoskeletal system.

Named as “Kengoro,” the robot is comprised in the very same mass to match a human being, and it has one more interesting feature, as it has the ability to sweat. Revealing their results in publication platform Science Robotics, the sweating element came as a way to bypass the overheating that robots typically encounter, and it’s tested while performing a variety of exercises as seen in the video above.

In addition, scientists believe that these sweating robots can be examined further to better understand human movement, while they’ll also be utilized to create sufficient crash test dummies, artificial human limbs and more.

For a further look and additional details on this exercising robot, be sure to read the full story at Science Robotics.
