What We’re Saying: Matthew M. Williams’ budding partnership with Nike sees the Givenchy and 1017 ALYX 9SM designer unveil two new colorways of his hyper-futuristic Zoom MWW 4 sneaker.

The sneaker was previously released in a beige, silver, and black launch colorway. The two new colorways are “Triple Black” and “Rust Factor.” Both go well with the design, which is strongly reminiscent of robotics and futuristic mechanical engineering.

The sneakers are not on Nike’s launch calendar just yet, however, have been added to Italian retailer One Block Down’s raffle system with a launch date set for April 27.

YEEZY & Balenciaga Team Up On the Ultimate DMX Grail

Before DMX’s funeral, Kanye West’s YEEZY and Balenciaga are coming together for a special commemorative shirt.

YEEZY asked Balenciaga to design a T-shirt in tribute to the late artist Earl Simmons, aka DMX. It will be sold by Yeezy on a dedicated webpage starting April 24th. The tribute is to the artist and his fans, with all proceeds benefiting Simmons’s family.

DMX will be honored with two memorial services this weekend. Though the physical events will be restricted to friends and family, the proceedings will be live-streamed to the public.

Today, Saturday, April 24 at 4 pm ET, a Celebration of Life memorial will be held at the Barclays Center and broadcast live on BET. This is followed by a traditional Homegoing Ceremony on Sunday, April 25 at 2:30 pm ET, which will be live-streamed on the rapper’s YouTube channel – you can tune in below.

Visionary Designer Alber Elbaz Has Passed Away at 59

Alber Elbaz — the Israeli-Moroccan designer who transformed Lanvin — has passed away from covid, aged 59. The news was confirmed by Compagnie Financière Richemont, his joint venture partner in AZ Factory.

In a public statement, Richemont chairman Johann Rupert wrote, “It was a great privilege watching Alber in his last endeavor as he worked to realize his dreams of ‘smart fashion that cares’. His inclusive vision of fashion made women feel beautiful and comfortable by blending traditional craftsmanship with technology – highly innovative projects which sought to redefine the industry.”

Elbaz landed at Lanvin in 2001, having been recruited by Ralph Toledano to helm Guy Laroche in Paris in 1996, and succeeding Yves Saint Laurent at the helm of Rive Gauche ready-to-wear in 1998. His draped designs and “women first ethos” catapulted Lanvin to huge success during his 14 year tenure at the French fashion house.

When Lanvin fired Elbaz as its artistic director in October 2015, the fashion world was shocked. The acrimonious split came as a surprise to many, including Elbaz himself, who believed he would become a Lanvin lifer. In 2011, when asked if he would consider moving to another brand from Lanvin, Elbaz told the Financial Times, “How could I do that? The people who work there enable me to do what I do. They are my orchestra. I can’t say to them, ‘Oh, bye, Mummy’s leaving now.’”

“I was in mourning,” he said of the decision. “I never felt the need to create a family, as I felt that my work and co-workers were my family. I felt loneliness and shame, and I started doubting myself.”  But after a five-year hiatus, Elbaz returned to fashion on the spring/summer 2021 couture schedule with AZ Factory. The concept behind the brand was to celebrate body positivity and bring happiness back to fashion.

“Alber had a richly deserved reputation as one of the industry’s brightest and most beloved figures,” wrote Rupert, “He was a man of exceptional warmth and talent, and his singular vision, sense of beauty, and empathy leave an indelible impression.”

Could Travis Scott Exonerate the CdG PLAY x Converse Chuck 70?

With Dunk-hype at an all-time high, Travis Scott has been giving his beloved silhouette a bit of a break. This weekend, for example, he slipped on a pair of the divisive COMME des GARÇONS PLAY x Converse 70s.

Over the past 12 years, the Comme des Garçons signature Play line’s heart logo has appeared across multiple Converse silhouettes. It’s a common misconception that the PLAY design team simply added the red heart logo to the 2009 All Star when in fact they made a number of subtle changes, like stripping back the Chuck Taylor’s contrast stitching and omitting the Chuck Taylor logo to create a minimalistic sneaker that spotlighted the Filip Pagowski-designed red heart logo.

For their fourth collaboration, they borrowed design cues from their first collab to launch their hugely popular Chuck 70. The 2015 iteration became so popular it would be re-released each season afterward. Despite (or perhaps because of) its simplicity and recognizable design, the sneaker became associated with lazy collaborations of that period.

The oft-memed chucks have become the subject of ridicule in the intervening years, but if anyone has the influence to restore the “Heart Shoes” to greatness it’s La Flame. Comments such as “Cdg converse finna go up,” and “watch everybody about to go get cdg chucks again” flooded Scott’s Instagram post. Of course, Scott has proved that he can sell just about anything — but time will tell if we’ll actually be seeing a CdG Chuck revival this summer.

The World of NFTs Will Henceforth Be Known as the Planet of BAPE

BAPE is about to turn the NFT marketplace on its head.

On Friday, BAPE and its sister brand AAPE announced a forthcoming release of five limited edition NFTs in conjunction with CROSS STUDIO. While every possible type of brand or personality is entering the NFT game, for BAPE this feels like a logical next step.

Beginning April 30, five BAPE NFT designs will be available for purchase on Mintable. Including three classic BAPE ABC camo patterns, as well as two designs dubbed AAPE x Lilkool Artwork 1 and AAPE x Eric Inkala Artwork 1. The AAPE artwork will be offered in 5,000 units, making it the most available of all the NFTs. Meanwhile, blue and pink BAPE ABC camo patterns are given a more limited run of 250 units. With the most exclusive design being BAPE’s classic ABC camo print in green, which will be available in only 150 units.

However, this is still unchartered territory for BAPE, who up until now have mainly dealt in IRL physical releases. Which is why the brand sought out Tirith Capital to advise on the digital launch.

“BAPE® camo pattern is the soul of the brand, and among the past 28 years, BAPE® has already created over 200 iconic camo patterns,” Tirith Capital’s founder, Jimmie Jeremejev said in a press release. “Since its unique designs drive the brand experience, it only makes sense to take advantage of NFTs as a way to keep the ecosystem cutting edge. And, considering that BAPE® has collaborated with partners such as Marvel, SpongeBob, and Nintendo, the potential for future digital art NFT collaborations is enormous.”

BAPE has always thrived off hype, whether it’s out of the box collaborations or now milking the NFT craze. The brand’s cult following paired with extreme exclusivity, has made its products extremely coveted within the streetwear market. Adding limited NFTs to its rare product catalogue is a sure-fire way to generate demand.

From how BAPE is positioning itself ahead of its NFT debut, it looks like the NFT market isn’t just one BAPE wants to enter, but one it expects to dominate.

WAP Gloss? Here’s What We Expect From Cardi B’s Upcoming Beauty Brand

Is there anything Cardi B can’t do? From record-shattering music and designing hyped footwear and apparel collabs, to infectious acting appearances, Cardi is leaving no industry stone unturned. So it comes as no surprise that the rapper is taking a book out of the celebrity billionaires club and venturing into the beauty industry with her own line.

TMZ reported this week that Cardi’s company Washpoppin Inc. has officially filed legal documents to trademark “Bardi Beauty.” Per a summary of the trademark application, the Bardi Beauty filing initially occurred on April 16. The potential goods and services listed under the Bardi Beauty name are cosmetics, fragrances for personal use, hair care preparations, non-medicated skin care preparations, nail polish, and nail enamel.

The filing leaves a wide margin for Bardi to enter the beauty game. Whether it’s a traditional makeup line, selling Cardi’s signature claws, gushy skincare, or a hair- (or wig) care line.

Cardi has been making CEO moves behind the scenes for a while now. In September 2020, it was reported that Cardi B had filed legal documents aiming to get her ubiquitous “WAP” phrase secured for potential liquor, beer, soft drinks, clothing, purses, and other products – which in light of the current filing could include cosmetics. So… WAP gloss could be a thing?

This entertainment-to-beauty-industry formula has been working wonders for a while now, with the likes of Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Kylie Jenner, and Kim Kardashian making big bank in the process. With Cardi’s global cult-like following and cultural currency, it wouldn’t surprise us if Bardi Beauty turned the rapper into the next makeup mogul. We will definitely be keeping a close eye on the TL for further updates.

Here’s Why This Chadwick Boseman NFT Is so Important

Chadwick Boseman has been immortalized as an NFT. And the special edition one-off artwork of the late actor was created with a very meaningful cause in mind.

The futuristic and surrealist tribute piece was created by artist Andre Oshea and depicts Boseman’s head cast in gold, floating ethereally in an otherworldly space. The inspirational artwork will be auctioned on the NFT platform Rarible from Sunday, April 25 to Tuesday, April 27. And all proceeds from the sale will be donated to The Colon Cancer Foundation (CCF) to support their invaluable work.

Boseman tragically died in August 2020 from advanced-stage colon cancer, a diagnosis that he chose to keep private. Boseman’s battle with the disease and tragic passing brought attention to the fact that colon cancer is a disease that disproportionally affects the Black community at increasingly young ages. In his honor, the NFT auction will support the CCF’s continuing efforts to fight against colon cancer through research, advocacy, and education.

The striking artwork is also the first foray into the world of NFTs for “Hollywood’s Biggest Night.” The piece will be part of an “Everyone Wins” Nominee Gift Bag, given to Oscar nominees at the ceremony this Sunday, April 25. Andre Oshea’s commemorative NFT artwork also coincides with Boseman’s posthumous Lead Actor Oscar nomination for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

For Oshea, on this special occasion, the artwork is also a celebration of Black creativity in cinema and art, and a salute to Boseman’s undeniable cross-generational influence as the first superhero of African descent, Black Panther. The artwork honors a boundary-breaking actor while ensuring that his tragic battle with colon cancer and ultimate passing wasn’t in vain.

Gamers Are About to Become Olympians With the Inaugural Esports Olympics

The Olympics are going virtual. In a landmark decision, the International Olympics Committee (IOC) will be hosting a virtual esports event, tied to the upcoming 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Taking place ahead of the Tokyo Games, the Olympic Virtual Series (OVS) will be the first-ever, Olympic-licensed event for non-physical virtual sports; Including video games such as eBaseball, virtual regatta sailing, Gran Turismo motor racing, and Zwift’s bike racing platform.

This new development is in line with the IOC’s Olympic Agenda 2020+5, which sought to expand the Olympics into non-physical forms of sports and reach wider audiences.

“The Olympic Virtual Series is a new, unique Olympic digital experience that aims to grow direct engagement with new audiences in the field of virtual sports,” IOC President Thomas Bach said. “Its conception is in line with Olympic Agenda 2020+5 and the IOC’s Digital Strategy. It encourages sports participation and promotes the Olympic values, with a special focus on youth.”

This virtual element of the Olympics comes at a crucial time. The Tokyo Olympics have repeatedly been canceled, delayed, and stalled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The IOC’s interest to dive into the virtual medium could create the much-needed buzz for the Olympics among the youth and communities such as video gaming fanatics.

The Olympic Virtual Series will kick off on May 13 and run until June 23.

This Isn’t Your Average Nike Dunk

Some will argue that after more than a year of constant releases, Nike has officially exhausted the Dunk. And while we can’t disagree, we’d be remiss if we didn’t highlight the brand’s new N7 iteration — because — it isn’t your average Nike Dunk.

Nike’s forthcoming N7 Dunk Low is jam-packed with artisanal flair. Beautifully complementing the purple suede upper is contrasting hand-stitched detailing, in addition to braided leather. While the exposed stitching decorates the toe box and heel, the black braided leather serves as a border for the Swoosh logo on the side, thus extending to the heel.

The luxe craftsmanship doesn’t stop there. Swatches of tan leather are stamped with Nike and N7 logos, and applied to the tongue to match the adjacent lace dubraes. The sneaker is then finished with graphic-printed insoles and gum outsoles, as tonal laces round out the design.

The “Dark Raisin/Black/White” Dunk Low will be a part of Nike’s larger N7 collection, which celebrates Native American and Indigenous communities in North America. According to @zsneakerheadz, the colorway is slated to release on June 21, although Nike has yet to announce the drop.
