When Japan finally surrenders to Allied troops at the end of World War II, the United States was in a frenzy. A massive celebration with thousands of Americans took over Times Square in a day that became known as “V-J Day,” or Victory Over Japan Day.

Among confetti and fireworks, an image has gone down in history as an icon of passion: the famous photo of a sailor kissing a nurse. However, it turns out that the story is not as romantic as many might imagine.
