Limber Up: Central Brooklyn Soccer Club

Recognizing basketball as an unofficial symbol of New York City, frequently captured through a cinematic lens, director and photographer Dylan Johnston sought a different facet of the city’s sporting culture. Documenting an authentic New York story from a local level, Johnston found himself in Brooklyn, connecting with the Central Brooklyn Soccer Club – a young football team that has grown to represent more than just the sport.

For short film Central Brooklyn Soccer Club, Johnston meets the players and coaches connected through the team – most of whom grew up together in Crown Heights and Flatbush. Building a sense of community, brotherhood, and commitment among its players – and the coaches and bodega workers who support from the sidelines – the top tier club competes for the state and wins, and sends players across the world to various training camps. Yet, its young players inevitably reach a point where they graduate and out-grow the team, moving on to college and new experiences outside the neighborhood.

Shifting with the environment and players over a three-day shoot, Johnston found himself welcomed into the community, capturing the team against the local landscape that surrounds them. From the field to the streets they live in, the roof of Tyler’s apartment building, and their favorite bodega, Central Brooklyn Soccer Club hones in on a small club with a vast impact, as a grounding presence for the neighborhood it serves, and a place for collaboration among its youth.
